UGC Renegade Game Chair Review: Register Review

UGC-Renegade-Game-Chair.jpg

Register Hardware have published a review of the UGC Renegade Game Chair. 'A minimum amount of assembly is required upon opening the (surprisingly big) box - nothing more than a few small bolts needing to be inserted and tightened with the supplied alan key, just to secure the arm rests to the body of the games chair. However, the seat back can prove a tad more troublesome to fit, and it would be wise to enlist additional help at this point, as you need to slide it into place and connect the audio cables at the same time. Needless to say, it's a little stressful to attempt solo.'

Review: USB Interactive Aquarium - Notebook Review

USB-Interactive-Aquarium.jpg

A review of Brando's USB Interactive Aquarium has been posted over at Notebook Review. 'The aquarium claims to be interactive and I guess it sort of lives up to that. There is a pop-up menu that has five fish icons that indicate the fish's need for playing, feeding, medical attention, turning the blue light on/off, and “refreshing” the fish after you kill them. Because they won’t just die of old age(like real fish), you have to try and kill them by overfeeding or underfeeding them or overmedicating them. When you succeed, game over, that is until you hit the refresh button (No toilets needed). The light button is kind of pointless since it's difficult to see in a lit office environment.'

Review: Nespresso C100T Essenza Single-Serve Automatic Espresso Machine - Single Serve Coffee.com

Nespresso-C100T-Essenza.jpg

Single Serve Coffee.com have published a review of the new Nespresso C100T Essenza single-serve automatic espresso machine. 'The big change from the Nespresso C90 to the Nespresso C100T Essenza is the ability to program an espresso and lungo sized coffee on the two coffee buttons that appear on the front of the machine. There is also a change in how the machine powers on. Instead of pushing the power on the front, you'll need to switch on the machine near the right side and then you can wait for the machine to heat up and use the brew buttons on the front. One of the things we liked about the C90 was the power on the front, but the tradeoff is not having to push the brew button to start and stop. In the end the new programmable buttons were a better choice, as we stopped panicking about overflowing our single serve coffee cups with too much coffee.'

PixelOptics: The New Frontier in Vision Enhancement

Pixeloptics.jpg

Sam Jaffe of Wired News reports on the significant innovation by Ron Blum [inventor businessman and ophthalmologist] and his company, PixelOptics , in seeking to provide eye-wear products to correct Presbyopia (inability of the eye to focus sharply on nearby objects, resulting from loss of elasticity of the crystalline lens with advancing age). 'At the heart of PixelOptics' technology are tiny, electronically-controlled pixels embedded within a traditional eyeglass lens. Technicians scan the eyeball with an aberrometer -- a device that measures aberrations that can impede vision -- and then the pixels are programmed to correct the irregularities.'

Tech Republic Article: Shoppers given points to ponder

There are some interesting insights in an article by attorney Eric J. Sinrod on TechRepublic, where he presents in simple language some useful reminders for online shoppers in particular.

Follow these steps when purchasing online:

• Print copies of all online receipts so that they can be checked against credit card bills.

• Print copies of all guarantees and warranties.

• Do not respond to e-mails asking customers for personal information. Businesses and financial institutions rarely reach out on their own seeking such information. It is better to contact a business directly on your own.

• Online retailers that display Truste and Better Business Bureau seals likely are to be trusted to safeguard personal information.

• Note whether Web sites begin with "https" instead of "http" in the browser area and whether they display a padlock icon in the lower right-hand border of the browser window, as this indicates secure encryption to protect customer identities. • Make sure that online retailers have solid privacy polices that make clear their customers' information will not be sold or transferred after a transaction occurs.

CNET Article: Should you pay for an extended warranty?

In our rush to purchase that gift or other "shiny new" gadget from local retailers, there is sometimes the tendency to ignore important small details especially the issue of warranty for the item. In most instances the item will be one which may not necessitate the extra few bucks on extended warranty, however, where the price of the purchase is significant, you should give serious consideration to the extra investment.

Tom Merritt, the Executive Editor of CNET.com discusses the details surrounding the usefulness of the extended Warranty.

"When you buy a product at a big electronics store, sales folks always push the extended warranty on you. Some people buy them every time, just to be safe. Others flatly refuse before the salesperson can mouth the letter W. You should probably behave somewhere between these two extremes but lean toward politely saying no.

Stores see extended warranties as pure profit. They cost a small amount of a salesperson's time and since most gadgets don't need repair, there's a huge profit margin. So does it ever make sense to buy one of these things?

You have to judge every warranty purchase on a case-by-case basis, but here are a few guidelines when making the call."

Handy-Gadgets Caution: Buyer Beware!

In the rush to purchase that gift or item I would suggest you bear in mind not all retailers whether on or offline are constrained by high morals in the the conduct their business activities. Some persons are just downright dishonest.

In the article Yahoo News [reposted from PC World. com] you can refresh your memory, of be informed of the five leading scams pervading the WWW.

.Here is a synopsis of the article.

"1. Action Fraud: You never get the product promised, or the promises don't match the product. The descriptions may be vague, incomplete, or completely fake. One scammer accepted bids for Louis Vuitton bags that she didn't own, and then scoured the Internet looking for cheap knockoffs that cost less than the winning bid.

2. Phishing Scams: You receive an e-mail that looks like it came from your bank, warning you about identity theft and asking that you log in and verify your account information. The message says that if you don't take action immediately, your account will be terminated.

3. Nigerian 419 Letter: You receive an e-mail, usually written in screaming capital letters, that starts out like this: "DEAR SIR/MADAM: I REPRESENT THE RECENTLY DEPOSED MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE FOR NODAMBIZIA, WHO HAS EMBEZZLED 30 MILLION DOLLARS FROM HIS STARVING COUNTRYMEN AND NOW NEEDS TO GET IT OUT OF THE COUNTRY..." The letter says the scammers are seeking an accomplice who will transfer the funds into their account for a cut of the total--usually around 30 percent. You'll be asked to travel overseas to meet with the scammers and complete the necessary paperwork. But before the transaction can be finalized, you must pay thousands of dollars in "taxes," "attorney costs," "bribes," or other advance fees.

4. Postal Forwarding/Reshipping Scam: You answer an online ad looking for a "correspondence manager." An offshore corporation that lacks a U.S. address or bank account needs someone to take goods sent to their address and reship them overseas. You may also be asked to accept wire transfers into your bank account, then transfer the money to your new boss's account. In each case, you collect a percentage of the goods or amount transferred.

5. "Congratulations, You've Won an Xbox (news - web sites) (IPod, plasma TV, etc.)" You get an e-mail telling you that you've won something cool--usually the hot gadget du jour, such as an Xbox or an IPod. All you need to do is visit a Web site and provide your debit card number and PIN to cover "shipping and handling" costs."
