Car Radio Sounds Set to Soar with Industry-First Digital-Input Audio Amplifier from STMicroelectronics

STMicroelectronics-TDA7801-Digital-Input-Audio-Amplifier.jpg

Press Release

Geneva, - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), the largest semiconductor supplier to the Automotive Infotainment segment, has introduced the world’s first car audio-amplifier with digital input. Direct connection to the digital audio player eliminates the need for signal conversion, resulting in higher sound quality, better noise immunity, simpler system design and greater system reliability.

The industry’s first automotive audio amplifier with digital input, ST’s TDA7801 addresses the coming trend towards a fully digital head unit and sound systems in the car, delivering numerous advantages over existing solutions that are based on analog inputs and digital-analog converters.

ST’s new power amplifier raises the bar in car-audio sound quality, in both dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio (from around 90dB to more than 105dB), and delivers intrinsically pop-free operation without clicks or noises during car battery transitions. The elimination of analog lines on the car-radio board also results in superb noise immunity, so that, for example, the audible effects of the cellular network interference are effectively cancelled.

The state-of-the-art manufacturing process used for the TDA7801 contributes to the reliability and robustness of the car-audio system, reducing warranty issues and failures in the field. In addition, the device comes complete with the most advanced built-in diagnostic features. First integrated in a power amplifier by ST in 2000 and now a de facto standard, the embedded diagnostics help improve the quality of the car-audio system, making it even more reliable and reducing warranty issues by registering any accidental misconnection that could damage the amplifier.

As important, ST’s fully digital audio power-amplifier design reduces the number of active and passive components, simplifying system design and delivering cost-savings at the system and manufacturing process levels.

The TDA7801 is the first member of ST’s new Digital Automotive Audio amplifier family. The Company is currently readying further additions to the family: a Class-SBi (ST’s patented efficiency class for the lowest power dissipation possible outside Class-D) version of the TDA7801 and a breakthrough digital-input Class-D solution that will deliver further increase in power savings.

The recognized leader in audio power amplifiers, ST currently commands 55% of the car audio power amplifier market.*

Samples of ST’s TDA7801 are available now, with volume production scheduled for Q2 2009. Unit pricing is $6 for 1000 pieces.

Review: Mini RC Intelli UFO Helicopter - The Gadgeteer

Intelli-UFO.jpg

The Gadgeteer have published a review of the Mini RC UFO Helicopter from Trend Times Toys. 'Like all RC toys, some type of controller has to be used. The one for the UFO is the smallest RC controller I've ever seen. It's powered by 3 AG13 button cell batteries (included) and is about the size of a lighter at 2.5 inches long. On the top are two buttons to control the LEDs on the UFO, a power indicator LED and the throttle. On the side is the controller power switch. As you will notice, there aren't any steering controls, just a simple throttle.'

Tom Bihn Checkpoint Flyer Review - CNET

Tom-Bihn-Checkpoint-Flyer.jpg

CNET have published a review of the Tom Bihn Checkpoint Flyer laptop bag. 'On the outside of the Checkpoint Flyer are two side pockets for pens or a small cell phone. The back of the bag includes a narrow pocket to keep your boarding pass within easy reach. There's also a wider pocket for a newspaper or magazine; in a very thoughtful touch, the manufacturer equipped this pocket with a useful zip-open slot that lets you slip the bag over the handle of your rolling luggage. Given how much you can fit in the bag, this last feature will give your shoulder a much-needed break from carrying the bag.'

LEDtronics Bulbs Enhance Danish Town's Street Light Quality While Decreasing Power Consumption

LEDtronics-White-LED-lamp.jpg

Press Release

TORRANCE, The public library in Ølstykke, a town of 20,000 on the northern part of Denmark’s largest island, Zealand, north of Copenhagen, was having problems with the lampposts in its parking lot. Not only were the standard 75-watt bulbs used in each of its 30 lamps a tremendous drain on electricity, but the lamps themselves were habitual targets for young vandals. Consequently, library patrons often were left in the dark for days, until the bulbs were replaced.

Kristian and John Henckel from Henckel Gruppen ApS, representatives in Denmark of Torrance, California-based LEDtronics®, Inc., came to the rescue. For demonstration, they replaced the Philips 75-watt incandescent E27 bulbs of two streetlights in the parking lot with 15-watt LEDtronics PAR30 LED lamps, one warm white and the other, daylight white.

They took lumen measurements before and after the replacement. The meter was placed on the ground and indicated 9 Lux for the incandescent lamps, while it measured 93 lux for the LEDtronics daylight white lamp. When measured at a height of 3.1 meters above ground, the meter showed 85 Lux for the LEDtronics warm white bulb.

“The result was amazing!” said John. “The city engineer and the vice director were so impressed with the results that they refused to let us take back the test bulbs, as they planned to provide demonstrations for the rest of the staff of the Egedal Kommune (municipality).”

John and Kristian estimate the town has some 1,000 of this type of lamppost, called vintergaekker (named after the snowdrop plant whose shape it borrows). It is an older type of lamp that is being replaced in many municipalities. “In this case, instead of changing the lamps, they saved money by changing just the bulbs,” says John. “In addition to saving 60 watts per lamppost, now the bulbs are much more difficult for vandals to destroy because of the strong housing.”

With an 80% power reduction and 1033% more light intensity, the Henckels say Egedal has subsequently decided to start the gradual switch to LEDtronics LED lighting all around the kommune in the near future, especially since the townspeople pride themselves for being scrupulous energy savers.

“The parking lot will, according to energy calculations, have simple payback within just one year,” says John. “If you disregard service costs and count only energy savings, they will earn money back in 23 months. And since other municipalities heard about this, we have already had meetings on other and much larger projects as well.”

Founded in 1983, LEDtronics® leads where others only follow when it comes to designing, manufacturing and packaging state-of-the-art LED bulbs and lamps to meet the world's constantly changing lighting needs. Our inventive product line encompasses an array of direct incandescent lamp replacement Based LED bulbs, low-cost snap-in and relampable Panel Mount LEDs, high intensity sunlight-visible Discrete LEDs, PCB LED circuit board status indicators, surface mount diodes SMT LEDs, full-spectrum rainbow RGB LEDs and Infra-Red (IR) LEDs.

Dukane Introduces New Dual Servo Spin Welders

Dual-Servo-Spin-Welder.jpg

Press Release

The Dual Servo Spin welder is designed for welding circular parts that have a tight tolerance requirement for both the orientation between the parts being welded and the overall final welded assembly height. The new design builds on the solid foundation of Dukane’s existing single servo-spin welder, by replacing the pneumatic Z-axis drive with a second servomotor. The unit’s control system provides the ability to hold orientation tolerances of +/- 0.1 degree of rotation and Z-axis tolerances of 10 microns. In addition, the control system coordinates the performance of both servomotors thereby providing the user with a new welding mode Dukane calls “constant torque”. This “constant torque” welding mode provides the user with the ability to specify a torque value that most closely matches the melt flow rate of the material, and the controls system coordinates the Z-axis velocity and RPM to provide this torque throughout the weld cycle.

Pre-weld parameters that can be programmed include part pick-up and trigger by position or torque. Programmable welding methods include Weld by Time, Number of Turns, Collapse Distance w/ orientation, Absolute Distance w/orientation and Energy. Post weld control features include Hold by Time, Hold by Collapse Distance, Hold to a Fixed Position, and Hold in Constant Thrust.

The new dual servo unit employs the same user friendly operator interface that was introduced on the original single-axis servo-spin welder. Setup of machine is virtually effortless thanks to the “new position” jog teach feature. This intuitive interface allows the operator to quickly and simply jog the unit to both the final orientation axis position and the final Z-axis height position. Alternately, if this data is known, it can be entered directly through the color, touch-screen panel that serves as the user interface. Error conditions are graphically indicated on the panel and include an explanation of the source of the error.

All machine setup parameters are programmed through the password-protected interface. This insures that no unauthorized adjustment of the machine setup can occur. A special new programmable feature also allows the user to define the “home” position, thereby allowing the elimination of unnecessary vertical stroke and thereby reducing overall cycle time. The machine can store up to eight setup files in local memory, and has programmable limits on up to 11 independent process parameters. All weld data can be exported.

Another key characteristic of the design is the unitized packaging of the thruster portion of the press. With this design the user interface, the controls, and the mechanical functions of the machine are all contained in one package, thereby eliminating any potential problems with external cabling.

The Servo spin product line includes 5 different models, two of which are Dual Servo. The first is the high speed/low torque machine for small assemblies up to 80mm.diameter and the second is low-speed/high torque models for larger parts. The dual Servo and the pneumatic servo welders by Dukane meet CE requirements. The equipment includes a 2-year warranty and is backed by Dukane’s industry renowned service and support.

Dukane is a global supplier of Spin, Laser, Ultrasonic, Vibration, Hotplate and Heat staking, tooling and software for both OEM and commercial plastic assembly markets Dukane is an ISO 9001:2000 certified manufacturer. Review: Grundig GUDSTB2000 Freeview Receiver - Trusted Reviews

Grundig-GUDSTB2000-Freeview-Receiver.jpg

Trusted Reviews have published a review of the Grundig GUDSTB2000 Freeview Receiver (digital TV box). 'From a distance, this budget box from Grundig - a brand whose resurgence in the UK has been boosted recently by its involvement in Freesat - is surprisingly good-looking for such a low-cost unit. Its curved, uncluttered fascia and matte finish give it a pleasantly esoteric vibe - in fact if it weren't for the DVB logo on the front it would be hard to tell what it was. It's only when you pick it up and feel its light and plasticky bodywork that you're reminded of its budget price tag. A quick glance at the rear panel is also initially deceptive. Our eye was drawn to the USB port, which could have opened up the possibility of playing back MP3 files or viewing JPEGs, but sadly those dreaded words ‘for service use only' reared their ugly head.'

Review: Onkyo TX-SR576 AV Receiver - Pocket-Lint

Onkyo-TX-SR576-AV.jpg

Pocket-Lint have published a review of the Onkyo TX-SR576 AV receiver. 'The TX-SR576 supports most but not all audio codecs available. You get Dolby Digital EX, DTS ES, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, DTS Neo:6 and DTS 96/24 decoding however not Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio. Fear not, however, as if you've got a PS3 or a half-decent Blu-ray player it will do the audio decoding for the codecs not supported anyway meaning you can still benefit. Get past all the what-it-can-and-can't-do limitations and you're left with a receiver that still performs very well. When it comes to the set-up it's all very simple thanks to the Audyssey 2EQ RoomEQ/auto set-up. The system merely involves you dumping a microphone in the centre of the room and the amp doing the rest. The system then goes about determining how many speakers you've got connected, their size, the distance from the microphone and therefore the optimum settings for your system.'

Slingbox Classic Review - Tracy and Matt's Blog

Sling-Media-Slingbox-Classic.jpg

A review of the Sling Media Slingbox Classic player has been posted over at Tracy and Matt's Blog. 'Most users of the Slingbox, in the UK at least, are going to be using it for controlling their Sky box remotely so I'll talk in those terms. [Though if you look at the SlingMedia site you'll see that the Slingbox supports lots of other devices]. In general I would imagine that everyone would use the Scart Adaptor, that comes with the box, plugged into one of the Sky outputs. Then the 3 pin Combination Audio/Video cable plugs into that, and then the other end into the input of the Slingbox. Then you hook up the ethernet cable to your router, plug the IR Cable into the Slingbox and route the cables so that the IR transmitters are pointing at the right part of the Sky Box.'

New Océ Arizona 350 GT UV curable flatbed printer includes support for white ink

Oce-Arizona-350-GT-UV.jpg

Press Release

Fast production print speeds enable higher throughput on rigid or roll media

Trumbull, CT - Océ today announced the new Océ Arizona® 350 GT UV curable flatbed printer, which includes support for white ink printing and high production print speeds. The Océ Arizona 350 GT printer will be on display in the Océ booth #1041 at the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) Expo, October 15-18 in Atlanta, and the Océ booth #2400 at Graph Expo, October 26-29 in Chicago.

The Océ Arizona 350 GT is the next generation model in the award-winning Océ Arizona printer line. It uses UV curable inks and Océ VariaDotTM imaging technology to deliver near-photographic image quality for nearly any application. Designed as a true flatbed system, it can print on a wide variety of rigid substrates and features a Roll Media Option for printing onto flexible media.

The Océ Arizona 350 GT expands the popular Océ Arizona family of UV curable, flatbed printers, which also includes the Océ Arizona 200 GT and the Océ Arizona 250 GT printers.

White ink expands capabilities
The Océ Arizona 350 GT printer includes a White Ink Option that can be added at the factory or in the field. The White Ink Option enables under-printing on non-white media or objects, over-printing for backlit applications on transparent media and printing white as a spot color. Under-printing white ink provides a base for non-white surfaces upon which color can be added, giving users the ability to expand their range of offerings to include specialty applications. Over-printing white ink provides a diffusion layer for backlit applications that will be viewed from the unprinted side, enabling users to produce high quality backlit images for point-of-purchase applications. The ability to also print white ink as a spot color enables white features of images to be highlighted for greater effect.

Production print speeds
The Océ Arizona 350 GT printer features production print speeds up to 239 square feet per hour on rigid media and up to 188 square feet per hour using the Roll Media Option. This enables users to print nearly sixty full-sized (4’ x 8’) boards in a single eight-hour shift, or more than 1,615 square feet of flexible media.

Printer basics
The Océ Arizona 350 GT combines a true flatbed design with a separate, dedicated roll-to-roll system. It can print onto rigid media up to 49” wide x 98” long x 1.89” thick. With the Roll Media Option installed, users can print onto flexible media up to 87” wide. It uses four-color (CMYK) plus White UV curable inks and Océ VariaDot imaging technology with near-photographic image quality.

The Océ Arizona 350 GT is a true flatbed design that uses a vacuum system to hold media stationary on a flat surface, ensuring accurate registration even on multiple imaging passes. Full bleeds can be printed, saving time and labor costs in finishing. No minimum print size means just the necessary materials are used with no substrate waste. Unlike all other flatbed or rigid-capable printers, the Océ Arizona 350 GT prints along the long axis of rigid media to optimize throughput – the fewer the number of printing passes over the media, the higher the average productivity.

The Océ Arizona 350 GT joins the popular Océ Arizona family of UV curable, flatbed printers at the top of the range. The Océ Arizona 250 GT printer uses four-color (CMYK) ink and prints at speeds of up to 172 square feet per hour. The Océ Arizona 200 GT printer also uses four-color (CMYK) ink and prints at speeds of up to 101 square feet per hour. All share the same robust architecture and deliberate design that offer the Océ values of quality, reliability, productivity and user-friendliness.

Outstanding image quality, designed for productivity
The Océ Arizona 350 GT printer uses Océ VariaDot imaging technology that enables a printhead to produce dots of variable size versus printheads using fixed-droplet technology. Océ VariaDot technology creates these variable dots by dispensing ink droplets that vary in size from 6 to 42 picoliters. The ability to vary the drop size to as little as 6 picoliters produces sharp images with smoother gradients and quarter-tones. The ability to jet larger droplets up to 42 picoliters produces dense, uniform solids. The result is near-photographic image quality with a sharpness only before seen at resolutions of 1,440 dpi or higher.

In addition to superior image quality, Océ VariaDot imaging technology with four-color inks uses significantly less ink compared to six-color printers with fixed-droplet inkjet technology. This lower ink consumption results in ink savings of up to 50 percent over fixed-droplet, six-color printers.

Opportunities for applications that command premium prices
The Océ Arizona 350 GT printer can print on irregularly shaped or non-square items, heavy substrates such as glass, or materials that have an uneven surface such as wood. This is an advantage over competitive rigid-capable printers that use belt or friction-based media feed systems, as they can only print on square-cornered, lightweight materials of uniform thickness. The Océ Arizona 350 GT printer, along with the White Ink Option, opens the printing possibilities to more exotic applications that command premium prices.

A Roll Media Option can be added in the factory or in the field, giving customers the ability to print onto flexible media including vinyl, self-adhesive vinyl, scrim banner, paper and blue backed paper without compromising the rigid printing workflow. Once a rigid print is finished, the printhead assembly is positioned over the roll module and begins printing on flexible media, while the rigid material is swapped out and the new board is placed on the vacuum table and prepared for printing. When the flexible media printing is completed, the printhead assembly moves back to the table to resume printing on the rigid media. The media roll can be unloaded at any time without interrupting rigid printing, and there is no down time to reconfigure the system to change from one print mode to the other.

Beyond display graphics applications
The Océ Arizona 350 GT printer is ideal for producing a wide variety of display graphics such as event graphics, point-of-purchase displays, limited-term signage, banners, backlit and reflective rigid displays, transit advertising, and directional signage. But because of its ability to print on a range of materials not predetermined simply by “square, flat and thin” and its support of white ink, the Océ Arizona 350 GT printer can produce applications beyond the norm including custom furniture, glasswork, fixture enhancement, fine art, or nearly anything that the imagination can conceive.

Availability
The Océ Arizona 350 GT printer and the White Ink and Roll Media options are expected to be ready for customer delivery in the United States in November 2008. For other geographies, please contact your local Océ office. To drive the Océ Arizona 350 GT printer, ONYX® ProductionHouseTM Océ Edition software is available as an option.

Nextar I4-BC GPS Review - Digital Trends

Nextar-I4-BC-GPS.jpg

Digital Trends have published a review of the Nextar I4-BC GPS navigation system. 'Because the Nextar is part PMP (portable media player), part video display and part GPS unit, it has a few extra inputs than your average GPS unit. The strangest would be the back-up camera video receiver – a small T-shaped box that snaps onto the side and bottom of the screen using a six-pin connector. It’s relatively inconspicuous, but it’s also one more piece to lose if you make a habit of taking it on and off, and you can’t connect the GPS directly to the mount without it. The screen also has a headphone jack and power-charging jack on the right-hand side, along with USB port on the bottom for connecting it up to your computer. The power button has been handily located on the far top right of the unit, and the back even has a stylus squirreled away, which wasn’t really necessary for operation but might be nice inclusion for those with thicker fingers.'

Sony PlayStation 3000 Review - PC World

Sony-PlayStation-3000.jpg

PC World have published a review of the Sony PlayStation 3000 portable video game system. 'Let's start with the casing, which top to bottom and side to side looks virtually identical to the PSP 2000. Weighs and feels the same too. Have a closer look, however, and you'll notice some subtle tweaks. For starters, the 'Sony' moniker has been moved from the right side of the screen to its left, where the PlayStation logo used to be. Where'd the logo go? Look down at what used to be the 'Home' button, which if you think about it kind of makes sense, bringing the PSP into alignment with the PlayStation 3, which has a similar "master control" button smack in the middle of its wireless gamepad.'

PICO RadioStation Review - Register Hardware

Revo-Pico-RadioStation.jpg

The Register Hardware have published a review of the PICO RadioStation portable digital radio. 'Once the product was turned on, we were presented with the maximum number of stations available for our location within two minutes. Wireless network connection - WEP, WPA and WPA 2 security modes are all supported - is also easy: a number and character menu and the unit’s central control wheel makes entering passwords a doddle. Connection for content streaming is also simple thanks to straightforward menu choices. It's wired as well as wireless, and the connectivity run-down also consists of stereo left and right RCA jacks, a 3.5mm headphones socket and a USB port for potential future upgrades.'

Sony PlayStation 3 Review - CNET

Sony-PlayStation-3.jpg

CNET have published a review of the Sony PlayStation 3 (80GB) game console. 'Like the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, the PlayStation 3 can stand vertically or lie horizontally in an AV rack, though because of its curved top, it's not meant to have any other components resting on top of it. Early prototypes were shown in white and silver, but currently the PS3 is only available in black. The 20GB version (now discontinued) was all black, but the larger capacity (and all current models) are highlighted with chrome trim--and there's no way to customize its look as you can with the Xbox 360's interchangeable, if overpriced, faceplates. Judging from Sony's recent decision to bring out the PSP in more colors, we don't expect the company to stick to the black-only option for too long, especially since this system, like the PSP, is a fingerprint and smudge-magnet.'

Creative Vado Camcorder Review - Technology Reviews

Creative-Vado-Camcorder.jpg

A review of the Creative Vado camcorder has been posted over at the WashingtonPost.com. 'The Creative Vado records to 2GB of internal, non-removable flash memory and contains a removable battery pack that recharges when the Vado's USB connector is plugged in (a fully charged battery lasts roughly 145 minutes). Pure Digital's Flip Mino uses a similar battery system, although it is not removable or replaceable, while the Flip Ultra utilizes standard AA batteries. The Vado also has an AV-out port if you want to watch your videos on a TV—something that will quickly establish how poor the video quality on the Vado really is. The internal software on the camcorder doesn't allow for any editing or adjustment and only assists you with copying footage to a computer or uploading to YouTube. Also, the software is not compatible with Macs.'

CNET have publsihed a review of the Mobile Edge ScanFast Backpack. 'The front side of the bag, where your files and accessories are stowed, is impressively large. One deep compartment, with a double zipper that opens halfway down each side of the bag, contains a mesh pocket for discs or travel accessories on one side and an accordion file pocket on the other, with some space left over for books, folders, or other work materials. In front of that compartment is another deep pocket, accessible via a single 9.5-inch-wide zipper, which can accommodate notepads, paperbacks, and other materials. This compartment also contains a zippered pocket for your MP3 player as well as a pass-through for the headphone cord.'

Tangent Trio Desktop DAB Radio Review - Trusted Reviews

Tangent-Trio-Desktop-DAB-Radio.jpg

Trusted Reviews have published a review of the Tangent Trio Desktop DAB radio. 'Starting with those looks, there's one other thing that immediately strikes you about the Trio; the speaker's on the top. While undoubtedly peculiar there's actually a great deal of logic to this. For a start, it leaves the front free to be occupied by the controls and display, allowing the radio to be shorter and slimmer than otherwise possible. Secondly, with only one speaker, you're getting no stereo effect anyway so projecting the sound upwards helps to spread the sound out, filling the whole room with sound, rather than it just emanating from one corner.'

Energizer offers newest product innovation to those served by Bennington Project Independence

Energizer-Hearing-Aid-Batteries.jpg

Press Release

Bennington Seniors First in Nation to Receive New Zero Mercury Hearing Aid Batteries

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Energizer Battery has announced that after more than a decade of development and extensive testing, the company is introducing new zero-mercury hearing aid batteries, which are the first of their kind in the world. The new batteries are being produced at the Energizer plant in Bennington, Vermont and the company is celebrating the launch by donating the new products to their neighbors who are served by the Bennington Project Independence, a local nonprofit organization that promotes healthy living and independence among older and disabled adults.

"We're so pleased to offer this product to our neighbors first," said John Hall, Energizer plant manager. "Hearing health is tied to independence and maintaining a healthy, high quality of life. And it is especially important to continue to improve our products in ways that help power people's life-enhancing devices, such as hearing aids."

Bennington residents will be the first in the nation to use the new zero-mercury hearing aid batteries, which will be widely available throughout the U.S. beginning this month. Energizer is the only battery manufacturer in the world to sell a zero-mercury hearing aid battery to consumers. Through a combination of new product designs, purer raw materials and new manufacturing processes, Energizer's R&D scientists were able to develop the new batteries to be produced without added mercury, making them more environmentally friendly.

"With this product development, consumers and our company are taking small steps towards bigger positive changes," said Hall.

In 1990, Energizer was the first battery maker to remove mercury from household batteries. With the announcement of its zero-mercury hearing aid batteries, Energizer will once again lead the industry in mercury elimination and responsible product development. In addition to developing a battery that is better for the environment and for U.S. consumers, Energizer's research and development team also has been able to enhance product consistency

The development of Energizer's zero-mercury hearing aid batteries comes more than two years ahead of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association's (NEMA) commitment to eliminate mercury from button cell batteries by June 30, 2011. Energizer estimates that if all manufacturers were able to follow their lead, several tons of mercury could be removed from hearing aid batteries each year.

Facts about hearing loss from the Hearing Loss Association of America:
-- While more than 30 million Americans currently experience hearing loss, a mere one out of five people who could benefit from hearing aids are wearing them.
-- People with hearing loss wait an average of seven years before seeking help.
-- Hearing aids can help 95 percent of people with hearing loss.

Rex Plus® - The Electronic Watchdog that Never Sleeps

Rex-Plus-ED-50.jpg

Press Release

STI announces an effective way to help protect homes and businesses from burglars, thieves and intruders. Rex Plus (ED-50), the electronic watchdog, can "see" through thick doors, walls and glass with his electronic radar eyes and produces a barking alarm when a person approaches a protected area.

Rex is versatile and provides an excellent form of protection, without the annoying problems of owning a real dog. He doesn't require sleep, food or a walk. Simply plug him into any standard 110 VAC electrical outlet, and he'll stay on duty around the clock. Rex has variable distance sensitivity (up to 30') as well as volume control.

Any indoor location can be selected where movement is to be detected; such as hidden behind the front door. Turn Rex Plus on and he begins detecting. When he senses movement, he begins to emit the ferocious barking sounds of a large, unhappy attack dog. The closer the intruder gets, the more frequent the barking becomes. As the intruder backs off, the barking decreases in frequency, stopping completely when movement is out of range. It is very realistic and effective.

In addition to the barking sound of a ferocious attack dog, Rex also offers continuous sounds of the rainforest to announce the arrival of visitors or a barking dog for 15-20 seconds, then a siren.

As stated by Ann Bryant, director, Bear League:

Actually, we love this area and our Black Bears are a vital part of it. But they really are burglars-constantly in search of any kind of food wherever they can find it. And often, that's in the kitchens of homes and cabins. It was a severe problem and we tried just about everything to solve it-pest control products, Pine Sol, chemicals of one kind or another, motion activated alarms and so on. Nothing seemed to work. Then someone mentioned electronic barking dog alarms.

People depend on our advice so we tested all of them-eight different kinds from eight different companies. Based upon their effectiveness, dependability, price and other factors the clear cut winner turned out to be STI's Rex Plus Electronic Watchdog.

We ordered cases and cases of them. The word went out. And people lined up to buy them.

Bottom line: Rex works. It has indeed helped solve our problem with bears breaking into residences for food and the resulting destruction. Bears no longer are creating havoc in their quest for something to eat before going into hibernation.

As far as the bear is concerned, he or she is totally convinced the home that is protected by Rex is guarded by a large, vicious and very angry German Shepherd. It helps too that the closer the bear gets, the louder and angrier Rex becomes. The bear wants no part of that and quickly trots off.

We think Rex is great! In fact, we have already placed an order for a whole new shipment of them.

For more information on STI Rex Plus (ED-50) or the entire Stopper® Line, call 800-888-4784, fax 248-673-1246, email info@sti-usa.com or visit www.sti-usa.com. STI's address is: 2306 Airport Road, Waterford, MI 48327-1209.

Winegard RCDT09A Review - CNET

Winegard-RCDT09A.jpg

CNET have published a review of the Winegard RCDT09A digital to analog converter box 'Compared with the standard "black box" DTV converter design, the exterior of the RCDT09A is one of our favorites so far. The unit itself is more compact than the majority of DTV converter boxes, coming in at 5.5 inches wide by 1.75 inches high by 6.5 inches deep. The front faceplate is silver, with a strip of black across the center. There are front panel controls for power, as well as for changing channels, which is nice because that means it will work even if the remote goes missing. The included remote is decent. We loved that the large gray buttons for channel and volume are prominently placed in the middle of the clicker. We also liked the directional pad above.'

Kodak-ESP-Wireless-All-in-One-Inkjet-Printer.jpg

Press Release

Kodak Continues to Innovate on Convenience and Ease-of-Use with Secure Wi-Fi Printing, One-Touch Controls and New Intelligent Paper Tray System

Colgne, Germany, Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK) welcomes consumers to an even more affordable and effortless way to print, copy and scan photos and documents with the new KODAK ESP 7 & ESP 9 All-in-One (AiO) Printers. . Kodak has combined the latest in printing technology with affordable, premium-quality inks to create sleek and powerful printers that allow consumers to print up to twice as many photos and documents for their money, saving consumers an average of $110 a year on ink*, compared to other leading consumer inkjet printers on the market.

"Kodak is delivering on its promise and is bringing people affordable, premium ink with the introduction of the new KODAK ESP 7 & ESP 9 ESP 9 All-in-One Printers," said Susan Tousi, general manager, Inkjet Systems and vice president, Eastman Kodak Company. "We are focusing on providing innovative and intuitive printing solutions that deliver superb-quality results and the lowest total ink replacement cost in the industry**."

Latest Innovations in Convenience and Ease-of-Use

The KODAK ESP 7 & ESP 9 AiO Printers feature the most intelligent paper tray system in the consumer inkjet printing industry. This new feature automatically adjusts settings based on 4x6 or 5x7 sizes and estimates paper amounts on both trays to ensure that consumers are more productive when printing. Additionally, secure Wi-Fi printing increases efficiency and flexibility by the ability to print from anywhere in the home to one cost-efficient printer. The 10" one-touch control panel on the ESP 9 AiO Printer is a consumer inkjet industry-first that makes printing, copying, scanning and faxing even easier.

High-Quality and Performance at Significant Value

The All-in-One Printers use Kodak's premium pigmented inks that come in a simple two-cartridge setup - a black cartridge ($9.99 U.S. MSRP) and a five-ink color cartridge ($14.99 U.S. MSRP). The exclusive KODACOLOR Technology embedded in each printer enables consumers to cost-effectively print crisp documents and KODAK lab-quality photos1 This technology is a combination of four key elements-pigment-based inks, micro-porous photo papers, color and image science, and a Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) print head. Furthermore, Kodak's Home Center Software includes exclusive Facial Retouch software that enables consumers to enhance their personal photographs right at home by automatically reducing blemishes and enhancing facial features in just one click.
The KODAK ESP 7 AiO Printer ($199.99) features a large 3" color LCD display along with memory card and USB slots to allow consumers to view, edit and print without a computer. The ESP 7 is enabled for Wi-FI and Ethernet-connected printing, and includes a duplexer for two-sided printing. In as little as 28 seconds2 people can print KODAK lab-quality1 4"X 6" borderless photos that last a lifetime3. Documents also print fast - up to 32 pages per minute in black and 30 pages per minute in color.4
The KODAK ESP 9 AiO Printer ($299.99) is perfect for the home office user with additional features such as fax capabilities, an auto-document feeder, built-in duplexer and built-in Wi-Fi and Ethernet connection to get the most of a home computer network.

Growing Channel Presence and Availability

Kodak recently launched the KODAK AiO printers and system supplies in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. Kodak is pleased to announce that Staples, the U.S.'s largest office superstore (OSS) chain, will now be offering KODAK AiO printers and inks. The ESP 7 AiO also will be available starting late September in select Best Buy and Circuit City stores, as well as Kodak.com. The ESP 9 AiO will be available online at kodak.com and other online retailers.

Kodak's Consumer Desktop Inkjet Printing Systems Achieve Best-in-Class Print Permanence Ratings from Wilhelm Imaging Research

The Kodak ESP 7 & ESP 9 AiO printers and Kodak pigment-based inks have been tested with a wide range of Kodak photo papers and plain paper by the world's leading independent permanence-testing laboratory, Wilhelm Imaging Research (WIR), and have received the WIR Certified Print Permanence Testing Seal. According to WIR, which developed the industry's first comprehensive, five-factor, print permanence testing methods, the KODAK AiO Printers, ink and media achieved WIR Display Permanence Ratings and Album/Dark Storage Ratings of greater than 120 years. Henry Wilhelm, president of Wilhelm Imaging Research stated, "The Kodak printers, pigment-based inks, and photo papers and plain paper have achieved the highest level of overall print permanence of any current consumer desktop printer system." "For consumers, this means that documents and photos printed with Kodak inkjet printers should be preserved in very good condition for more than 100 years in all common consumer display and storage environments. WIR's tests also showed that Kodak inkjet prints are very resistant to damage in high-humidity conditions and, even when printed on plain paper, the prints are water resistant and won't smear when pages are marked with highlighter pens." More information about the results of Wilhelm Imaging Research and QualityLogic findings regarding KODAK ESP All-In-One Printers and Kodak's advanced pigmented inks and papers can be found at www.kodak.com/go/inkdata.

CNET have published a review of the Targus Zip-Thru Traveler Laptop Case. 'Zipped up, the Targus looks much like any other 15-inch, laptop shoulder bag. It measures 16.9 inches wide by 6.5 inches deep by 13.9 inches tall, and is made of standard ballistic nylon. The rear compartment is very well padded, and should provide more than adequate protection for a laptop, but because only a computer is allowed in that compartment, everything else will have to fit in the front half of the bag. That front half is a bit on the narrow side, and large laptop power bricks will be cramped. It's perfect, however, for papers, magazines, and other flat objects. On the front face of the bag is a smaller, deeper pocket, with slots for pens, business cards, and bulkier items such as MP3 players or handheld game consoles.'
