Mio DigiWalker P550 Review - ZDNet

A review of the Mio DigiWalker P550 navigation PDA has been posted over at ZDNet. 'At 4.1 inches high by 2.4 inches wide by 0.6 inch deep and weighing in at 6 ounces, the Mio DigiWalker P550 carries a similar footprint to the HP iPaq rx5900, but we'd have to say the latter is the more attractive of the two with its glossy silver-and-orange casing and rounded edges. Now, we're not calling the P550 ugly, rather it's just a bit frumpy and pedestrian. Looks aside, the handheld is compact enough to carry and use on foot. Overall, it has a solid construction, though the back of the device has a slightly cheap, plasticky feel.

On the front of the handheld, there's a 3.5-inch, 65,000-color touch screen with a 240x320 pixel resolution. Though bright and colorful, text and maps had some pixelation and didn't look quite as sharp as other systems'. On the upside, the screen was still readable in various lighting conditions, including bright sunlight. Below the display, you'll find four quick-launch buttons: Maps, Contacts, Power, and Points of Interest search, by default. All but the Power button can be reprogrammed to launch any of the device's apps. The keys are large and roomy, so you shouldn't have any problems of pressing the wrong button. The only control that may give you trouble is the five-way joystick in the middle of the navigation array. It's rather small, so it'll require a delicate touch to move it in the direction you want; the joystick also acts as a "select" button when you press it in the middle.'
