Simple 5 Megapixel Digital Camera: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5

DSC-T5.jpg

Trusted Reviews writer, Cliff Smith, takes a look at the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5 and concludes with a favorable comment on this relatively easy to operate digital camera.'The DSC-T5 is the latest in Sony’s line of ultra-slim snapshot cameras, and has a broadly similar specification to the other cameras in the T series, such as the T7, T33, T3 and others, since all of them have a 5MP sensor and 3x optical zoom lens. It is certainly an attractively designed camera, and at just 20.3mm thick and 139g including battery and card it is one of the skinniest and lightest cameras on the market. It can slip into a shirt pocket with barely a bulge, making it ideal for social occasions. Priced at around £210 online, or £279.99 in the High Street, it is competing with the likes of the Pentax Optio S5n, the Canon IXUS 55 and the Olympus FE-5500.' This camera is available from Amazon for $287

HD Radio/FM/AM stereo radio: Boston Acoustics Recepter Radio HD

hdradio.jpg

High Definition [HD] radio basically refers to the reception of digital signals as opposed to the former analog transmission of AM and FM. The benefits of HD radio range from enhanced AM and FM sound through to increased listening options and the elimination of the noise interference of traditional radio. While I regret the absence of short wave broadcasts on this model I have to admit that the days of international broadcasting on radio (at least in the traditional sense) may have past. CNET's Steve Guttenberg reviews the Boston Acoustics Recepter Radio HD but has a critical view of its price. Coming in at a retail price of $500 this radio for all its features may be just out of the reach of the hobbyist. 'In case you're wondering just what HD Radio is and what it does for you, here's the deal: the all-digital technology eliminates AM and FM radio's background static, hiss, and pops so long as the signal is strong enough for the radio to pull it in. If an HD station's signal is weak, the radio automatically switches to regular radio and tunes into the analog version of station. Aside from hiss-free listening, another potential benefit of HD Radio is that it allows broadcasters to divide a single FM-radio frequency into multiple HD Radio broadcast streams. Here in New York City, only one HD station that we received--WCBS-FM--was multicasting, and one of its two subchannels sounded better than the other.'

Everybody wants a Motorola RAZR

RAZR V3c.jpg

Well almost! CNET reviews the most popular cellphone for 2005. 'As part of the Razr family, the Motorola Razr V3c for Verizon casts the same slim profile that has made it the most popular cell phone of 2005. At 3.9 by 2.1 by 0.6 inches and 3.5 ounces, the V3c is a hair bigger and heavier than the original Razr, but you don't notice the difference at all. In fact, it slips so easily into a pocket that it can be difficult to feel the vibrating ring. We liked the gray coloring--a sort of compromise between the black and silver models--though the flip mechanism was rather loose. The external display and controls and the location of the camera lens are the same on the first Razr. And here again, there's no camera flash.'

Samsung 56 Inch HDTV HL-S5679W

samsung1.jpg

Samsung appear to have scored big with the reviewers especially with its big screen televisions at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. CNET picked the HL-S5679W for its "Best of CES" award in the HDTV Category. 'The Samsung HL-S5679W's LED light source engine offers a host of benefits, including significantly improved longevity, increased color gamut reproduction, quicker turn-on time, and greater environmental friendliness. The high-powered LED light source replaces the current UHP bulb. The LED light sourced single chip DLP light engine does not require a color wheel and provides improved longevity. Red, green and blue LEDs sequentially fire to produce smooth, stable color. The new light engine provides a longer lamp life (up to 20,000 hours) and a shorter turn-on time (approximately 7 seconds). The engine is also mercury-free making it more environmentally friendly.'

Philips PET1000 10.2" Portable DVD Player

Philips PET1000.jpg

Tired of the eyestrain that comes from peering at those miniature screens on the budget-priced portable DVD players? Of course you are. If it is one thing I can say about the various technological gadgets they certainly aren't easy on the iris. The Philips PET1000 10.2" Portable DVD Player offers some relief with its 10.2" screen. 'Like the rest of the portable DVD player market, premium players such as the Philips PET1000 have come down in price, but they're still fairly pricey compared to entry-level portables, which now go for less than $150. What will spending about twice as much on the PET1000 buy you? Well, three things: a sleeker-looking player, a large 10.2-inch screen, and a significantly better picture. This player also happens to read MPEG-4/DivX video files--a big plus for people who have big DivX movie collections.'

Audioholics :Denon AVR-5805 Receiver Review

denon.jpg

If you take your audio and video seriously [and I mean seriously] and you can afford $6000 for a receiver, then maybe you can give the 'Denon AVR-5805 Receiver Review' some consideration. Audioholics reviews this piece of equipment which "incorporates a host of cutting-edge innovations and functionality to achieve our ultimate passion for all receivers – to faithfully recreate the producer’s original intent with absolute fidelity". 'There are pivotal moments in our society where we make quantum leaps in progress. Whether it pertains to civil rights or technology innovations to improve our lifestyle isn't the point. As a people, we strive to be better than ourselves and this may be our one endearing quality as a species which differentiates us from other primates. Ironically, this same concept can also be applied to home theater, though on a much smaller and perhaps less significant scale in the grand scheme of life. It's not often that a manufacturer makes a product under the guise of a certain category that absolutely shatters its stereotype and redefines the category or elevates it beyond the status quo. Lately, this appears to be a more common occurrence than not with Denon Electronics.'

Tech Update: Apple iMac Core Duo (17-inch, 1.83GHz)

17-inch1.83GHz.jpg

'The world’s best designed and easiest-to-use desktop just got faster. Now with the Intel Core Duo processor with two execution cores on a single chip — iMac brings a new generation of power to the amazing. Apple claims the new iMacs show speed boosts two to three times that of the old iMac G5.' CNET reviews the the Apple iMac Core Duo (17-inch, 1.83GHz). ' And aside from the CPU, the new iMacs have the same features as the preceding models, including the integrated iSight camera, Apple's Front Row media player software, and integrated wireless networking and Bluetooth capability. Getting the same features and an allegedly faster CPU for the same price as the preceding iMac G5 sounds great to us, especially considering that we just gave the iMac G5 an Editors' Choice award.'

Apple MacBook Pro (1.67GHz Intel Core Duo)

Apple MacBook Pro2.jpg

'MacBook Pro is the first Mac notebook built upon the revolutionary new Intel Core Duo. It’s actually two processors built into a single chip — which makes this by far the biggest leap in mobile Mac power you’ve ever seen.' CNET reviews the Apple MacBook Pro (1.67GHz Intel Core Duo). 'Bar none, the best thing about the MacBook Pro is that Apple has shelved IBM's plodding G4 PowerPC processor in favor of Intel's new Core Duo. We're also psyched to see a decent graphics card onboard, ATI's Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256MB of memory, along with x16 PCI Express architecture. Designwise, the MacBook Pro looks a lot like the 15-inch PowerBook and, at 5.6 pounds, it weighs about the same. Still, the MacBook Pro offers a slightly larger screen, a nominally thinner profile, and a fetching bundle of specs.'

Soldius1: Mini Solar Charger

solarcharger.jpg

In this review of the Soldius1 'solar-powered recharger for some handheld devices' on Technology Review, the reviewer laments the fact that the review is done in the dead of winter and hence the absence of sunlight. 'The Soldius1 was great at doing its thing outdoors, even on a cloudy day. But I wasn't about to sit in subfreezing temperatures to get that good light. Forget how uncomfortable it would be for me -- sharp cold isn't good for gadgets. All that said, the Soldius1 ($90 directly from its Dutch maker at mysoldius.com) is a great idea and works well. I could see it coming in very handy on car trips and camping excursions or during daytime power outages.'

A Handy Ipod Alternative: Creative Zen Vision: M 30 GB MP3 and Video Player Green

creativezen1.gif.jpg

Does the Ipod finally have a credible alternative or what? From the look of things [no pun intended], the folks at Creative may just have an Ipod 'killer' on their hands. But then they may not. CNET provides a fairly comprehensive review of this item in their roundup of the top picks from the recently concluded Consumer Electonics show.

'Upside: Finally, a player that can give the iPod a run for the money in the looks department, though only by copying it--perhaps payback for Apple borrowing the term Nano from Creative. The Creative Zen Vision:M--at 4.1 by 2.4 by 0.7 inches and 5.7 ounces--looks pretty stunning, has a much more colorful screen than the iPod's (it's not an OLED, as on the Zen Sleek Photo, which seems to have become irrelevant now), and comes in colors other than black and white, such as green, blue, and pink. Plus, Creative continues to provide features that iPod users can only dream about, including an FM tuner, a voice recorder, and support for a wide variety of video formats--DivX, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, WMV, and XviD among them. And let's not forget: the Zen can download tunes from a growing number of online stores. Plus, it's subscription compatible; iPod users are stuck with iTunes. Meanwhile, Creative promises four hours of video playback from its battery, whereas the iPod (30GB version) poops out after less than three.'

Apple's New Tools: MacBook Pro

macbookpro.jpg

Apple has added Intel processors to the iMac which it is claimed will make the machine operate several times faster. 'The Core Duo is the first chip built using Intel’s ground breaking 65-nanometer process — resulting in transistors so small, you could fit a hundred inside a single human cell. With smaller distances for electrons to travel, and two processors designed to share resources and conserve power, Intel Core Duo achieves higher levels of performance as it uses fewer watts which is what makes it possible to design a super-powerful MacBook Pro that’s only one inch thin.' The low-end MacBook Pro, sells for $1,999. It comes with a 1.67GHz dual core processor, a high-resolution 15.4-inch screen, an ATI graphics chip, an 80GB drive, a DVD/CD burner and 512MB of memory. The high-end MacBook Pro sells for $2,499 and comes with 1. 83GHz, 1GB memory and 100GB drive.

SanDisk 6GB flash-based e200 seriesMP3 Player

sandisk.jpg

CNETs James Kim covering the CES event [the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is held each January in Las Vegas, Nevada, and is sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association] reviews the e200 MP3 Player unvieled by Sandisk. 'Memory goliath SanDisk continues its assault on the flash-based MP3 player market with the launch of the flagship e200 series and the budget-class c100 series. The sharp-looking e200 measures 3.5 by 1.7 by 0.5 inches and has a maximum capacity of 6GB ($300). It boasts a photo- and video-friendly 1.8-inch color screen, as well as a durable titanium back cover and a user-removable rechargeable battery. The e200 also comes in $250 4GB and $200 2GB varieties, while the 6GB version is notable, as it's the highest-capacity flash-based player in the world. Other cool features include a MicroSD expansion slot, slide-show functionality, an FM tuner with FM recording, and compatibility with WMA subscription services. The players, which are physically much more finished than SanDisk players of past but with price tags to match, will be available in March.'

Radio's New Frontier: Sirius S50 Satellite radio

sirius.jpg

The Sirius S50 is a portable radio which does not get live content but receives live satellite stream only when it's plugged into a car or home dock and connected to a satellite antenna. However, when you are carrying the radio around it plays recorded content, as well as MP3 and WMA files. 'When in normal radio mode, the up (+) and down (-) buttons increment the channel up for each push. For example if you are on channel 3 and hit + you go to 4, and if you hit - you go back to 3. Use the same buttons the up (+) button scrolls up in the menu, and down (-) scrolls down, if you are going through stations, is a lower number, and down is a higher number. So if in the menu you are on 3 and you hit up (+) you go to 2, and vice versa.'

Description:

Gadget Television for the Future: Sony's Slider TV

Sony1.jpg

CNET's David Carnoy gives an insight into the Sony slider TV unveiled at the CES 2006 show/exhibition. 'You've heard of the slider phone. Now there's the slider TV. That's the idea behind the TAV-32FL2, a concept product that Sony is showing in its booth. While you're watching TV or a DVD, you leave the 32-inch Bravia LCD TV in the up position. But when you're just playing a CD, you can slide the speaker up to cover the screen. Though Sony reps were calling it a concept product, they did claim that the TAV-32FL2 would hit stores before the end of the year, although pricing was unavailable. They also said the product features virtual surround and that Sony will potentially sell different-colored speaker grilles to match your room's decor. This one is clearly targeted toward bedrooms or extrasmall living rooms.'

Powerhouse of a PDA:The DualCor cPC

cPC.jpg

CNET's Justin Jaffe reporting from the CES 2006 show/exhibition reviews the handheld DualCor cPC that has two independent CPUs--one from Intel and one from VIA--and a switch that toggles the user interface between Windows XP Tablet and Windows Mobile 5. 'While Intel is beating its chest about its new Napa dual-core platform, a company that's actually called DualCor is going a step further...or sideways. Or something. DualCor has taken Intel's PXA chip, typically found in PDAs, and put it in a box with a VIA processor, designed for laptops, to make something like a Frankenstein's monster palmtop PC. Called the cPC, this chunky little device, thicker but narrower than a PSP, combines the power of a purebred laptop with the instant-on accessibility of a PDA.

It's not a completely novel concept--plenty of laptop vendors are pursuing a more consumer electronics-like experience by offering instant-on technology that lets you watch DVDs or play CDs without booting the operating system. But that's more of an interim solution until Microsoft can figure out how to make Windows boot faster. The cPC, on the other hand, is not for the casual user; it's for the highly mobile worker who's frustrated by a PDA that can't handle heavyweight business applications and a laptop that can't cut the mustard as a PDA.'

Cordless Screwdriver: Skil 2936 3.6V Articulating Screwdriver with Site Light

Skil1.bmp

I dont mind using hand tools around the home but it is hard to avoid the urge to acquire the high-tech versions when they become available. In addition to the ease of use, the cordless power tools come with differnt conserns to thier manual equivalents. The primary issue relates to the battery which may or may not hold out for long periods of vigorous use. There is no easy solution to this issue but you should monitor your power tool and be able to guage how long the charge will hold up especially after purchase to determine whether you have made a reasonable choice.

Description:

'Skil 2936 This screwdriver has a 4-position handle for reduced fatigue and getting into tight spaces. Built-in site light for clear view of application. Auto lock for manual tightening and textured soft grip for added comfort. Includes: Charger, Battery, 2 Bits.'
